Surface crack detection

Surface crack detection is carried out by penetrant and magnetic particle inspection using either the contrast or fluorescent method.

In the photo is a 4,500kg alloy steel crankshaft undergoing magnetic particle inspection using an 8,000 amp heavy-cycle, programmable unit.

Volumetric flaw detection

Volumetric flaws are detected using ultrasonic testing and radiography.

The photo shows a cast steel load-bearing node undergoing ultrasonic examination.

Radiography of thick-wall valve body

The photo shows a 7,000kg valve body castings undergoing 100% radiography on the 8.5MeV linear accelerator.

Goodwin hold a full set of reference radiographs for all thicknesses of castings. These include ASTM E446, E186 and E280.

Chemical analysis facilities

At the foundry in-stream sampling of the molten metal is used - the samples are then analysed to ensure conformity to specification.

Two direct reading spectrometers (Hilgar EB982 35 channel, Fe and Ni Base) and ARL 80C 27 channel, Fe, Ni and Co base are used together with a LECO CS244 Carbon Sulphur analyser and LECO TN114 Nitrogen Oxygen analyser.

Shown in the picture is the machine the foundry use for metal sorting and PMI testing - a hand held Innov-X X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analyser (Fe, Co, Cu, Ni and Ti base).

The machine shop use a portable optical spectrometer (Spectrotest) for full qualitative analysis and a hand held NITON x-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyser for PMI

Cryogenic pressure testing

At their in-house Gas Testing Facility Goodwin are capable of testing pressures up to 414 bar g at temperatures from ambient to minus 196°C

High pressure helium gas testing is carried out in an explosion safety zone. Equipped with calibrated helium mass spectrometer with sensitivity of 2:10-minus 12 mbar l/s

Finish machined dimensional inspection

The Mitutoyo ultra high speed coordinate measuring machine (CMM) is seen here inspecting a stainless steel nozzle cover for a gas turbine.

The calibration of the CMM, as with all other measuring instruments at Goodwin, comes under the control of the ISO9001 accredited system

Finish machined dimensional inspection

Large machined items up to 5m in length can be measured in this coordinate measuring machine (CMM) which has XYZ 5x3x2 metre capabilities. It is calibrated to 6mm-1 accuracy to 6 decimal places.

Shown in the CMM is a 8,000kg three port main stop valve casting.
